Have you ran 'eval dircolors' on the file?  Have you made sure
this changes were taken into account in your shell?  

eval dircorlors ~/.dir_colors > colors  

Then paste the content of colors in say ~/.bash_profile and run

source ~/.bash_profile

If you have edited correctly your ~/.dir_colors file then
everything should be just fine.
