Truetype fonts in RH6.0

I wish to add tt font support to my linux system.  I've copied my fonts to
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/.  I added the path to ~/fs/config.  I then tried
to run ttmkdir.  I wasn't sure which dir to run it in (I've read conflicting
reports) so I tried in both.  I got an "command not known or file not found
message".  So gurus, how do I go about adding tt support?  Do I have to add
the font path to XF86Config file?   Are there any other steps and will the
fonts be visible to X and all apps (such as WP8)?
