RH 5.2 + Kernel 2.2.x breaks make

Ever since I upgraded my 5.2 box to the 2.2 kernel (following the HOWTO on
redhat's web site:

http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/kernel-2.2/kernel2.2-upgrade.html

Now make doesn't work anymore- it just segfaults.  No core dump, just
barfs.

rpm -qa | grep make
automake-1.3-2
make-3.76.1-5
pmake-1.0-10

Any ideas?  Thanks.
