Where to install?

Dear List:

I have recently installed KDevelop and all of it's associated components. I did
this as root. Now when I log in as a user, I am prompted to install some
components again. I guess the /root directory is off limits to me as a user. 

What is the best way to avoid this in the future?

How can I install an app and make it available to all?

What directories should I install to? (I've learned /root is not one of them)?

Any help would be appreciated,
