gpm and ppd conflict

When I am running gpm, my ppp connections fail like the modem wasn't there.
 I kill gpm and all's well.  This only happens in text-mode (i.e., while
using Gnome the modem works fine)...  does that suggest that it isn't a IRQ
problem?

I'm lucky(?) in that I've never had this trouble before.  Anyone know
what's up or how I would go about resolve this conflict.
