question about runlevels

when you machine boots up it starts certin services -- httpd, smb, etc etc

is it neccessary to stop alll of these services when the machine is
rebooted or it this done automatically?


for instance i have
S55httpd in my /etc/rc.d/rc3.d folder

do i need to have a 
K55httpd in the same folder
