Re: xfs question re Hal Burgiss xfs site

RE Hal Burgiss : http://feenix.eyep.net/xstuff/xfs.html

Hal Burgiss responded:

briefly, I am using
XFree86-xfs-3.3.5-1.5.x
XFree86-SVGA-3.3.5-1.5.x, ...etc,etc
   recently updated from rhat site.

my bootup in rhat5.2 says something like (too fast to catch it all)
...xfs nice.... xfs not found

Strange. What does 'which xfs' show?

[byers byers etc]$ which xfs /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs [byers byers etc]$

[byers byers etc]$ rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs
XFree86-xfs-3.3.5-1.5.x
[byers byers etc]$
[byers byers byers]$ rpm -V XFree86-xfs-3.3.5-1.5.x
[byers byers byers]$
so things look ok i thought.

But, as per the instructions in Burgiss site to also check by:
[byers byers byers]$ /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status
xfs (pid 3281
3284
3286) is running...
[byers byers byers]$

Something is broken. The PIDs get saved during the start up process so
that restarting, stopping will work. I would say this is bogus info,
and trust ps in this case.

so the ps command says xfs not running
and this seems consistent with that bootup error on xfs
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status

yet the /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status says xfs _is_ running
--I havent the foggiest idea why 3 pids showing

Me neither, unless you restarted this twice, and the init script is
fubar (sounds like it). Probably some error was encountered during
startup, and the init script logic wasn't able to catch it, and give
an appropriate response. Sh*t happens.

This 3-pid pattern seems to continuously being updated, really odd: [byers byers byers]$ /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status xfs (pid 14929 14932 14934) is running... [byers byers byers]$ [byers byers byers]$ /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status xfs (pid 14936 14939 14941) is running... [byers byers byers]$ /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status xfs (pid 14943 14946 14948) is running... [byers byers byers]$

I guess your idea that the init script is fubar is likely

Jack
