so things look ok i thought.

This 3-pid pattern seems to continuously being updated, really odd:

14934) is running...
[byers byers byers]$
[byers byers byers]$ /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status
xfs (pid 14936
14939
14941) is running...
[byers byers byers]$ /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status
xfs (pid 14943
14946
14948) is running...
[byers byers byers]$


I guess your idea that the init script is fubar is likely
