rl5 to rl1 makes init wig out

I never change runlevels manually so I wonder if I screwed up... I used
'telinit 1' to try to switch to single user mode to use hdparm and init
started consuming all my resources and stopped responding to changes in
runlevel (e.g., I could not shutdown).
Isn't it possible to change run levels without a reboot? What did I do wrong?
I'm using an old 486/66 running 6.2.
