I've been using vi for years too. I just found gvim a few weeks ago. I also
found vim. Using vim in an xterm is better than using gvim because you can
drop to the command line at any time. Opening files in the current directory is
easier than fooling around with paths in gvim. I had been using vi for years
and liking it, but always looking for something a little better.
Then I edited /etc/bashrc and added: alias vi=vim
Text editing has never been better. I get the power of an xterm and the
syntax highlighting and other features of vim.
