After some serious searching on the Netscape site,I finally found the missing
piece of the puzzle.
I had been trying to configure soffice, xpdf and xanim as helper apps in
Netscape. It would get the file and lauch the app, but it would not hand over
the file. The probelm is that there's s critical piece missing from all the
readily available docs:
You must add "%s" as a parameter to the command that runs the helper app.
For example:
xpdf %s
It does not say this in the mime types dialog or in the help files, yet your
helper apps will not work without it.
