getting ppp going in console

I'm trying to get an internet connection going in console with redhat 6.2,
no X on this machine. I used netconf to configure ppp. When I try and
connect to my isp everything starts normally: the remote number is dialed,
my user name and password is excepted, I get to "Connect: ppp0 <-->
/dev/modem", the config requests are sent out and then ends with the error,
"LCP: timout sending Config-Requests." The redhat site is telling me "Web
Support Temporarily Unavailable." I've hunted around on the site, read a
few docs on installing ppp with redhat and followed them to a T and end up
in the same spot as above. I'll keep hunting but if someone has seen this
before let me know.
Thanks,
kent
