Netscape Messenger error

Hello,
Though I filled in the preferences of Netscape's messenger correctly (initially
I could collect my mail from the server), I now get an error message while
collecting mail (" an error occured while sending your user name to the mail
server").

Does anyone know what went wrong? Has it perhaps something to do with the fact
that I used Netscape's messenger with the same preferences both as a root and
as a user?
