Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been thinking of buying a new
computer sometime this year, and had actually thought of Gateway. But now I
see how much smarter those Gateway people are than I am! Since you can't
run a modern OS like Linux on a 3½ year old Gateway then I sure as hell
wouldn't want to get stuck with one!

Since there's hundreds of other brands that *will* run a modern OS, even
when they get *really* old, I can't imagine why a 3½ year old Gateway
Pentium can't! Who would have known? Gee, it took a LOT of brains for those
Gateway people to design a computer that is considered by it's own maker as
absolutely and totally defunct, unusable and unrepairable in so short a
period of time!

Thanks for letting us know that the people at Gateway decided not to
support their products with replacement parts after such a short period of
time. When I do buy a new computer it *must* perform well beyond that sort
of limit, and I have to *know* that parts will be available for a much more
reasonable period of time.

Come to think of it, I have a Gateway CrystalScan 1024 NI monitor right
here. A long time ago I wrote an email to Gateway and asked for all the
timing info so I could tweak the settings in my X window server. It's been
four years and I *still* haven't got an answer! But now I'm REALLY worried!
This monitor is much older than 3½ years, and considering what happened to
you, coupled with the fact that they simply won't acknowledge my email (let
alone giving me the timing info I asked for,) I'd better start looking for
a non-Gateway replacement immediately. I now know that if something goes
wrong with my Gateway monitor I'll be left out in the cold by Gateway.

Again, thank you for posting your Gateway parts problem. Sorry I can't
offer a solution, but at least we're now warned.

To the folks at Gateway: Paul is absolutly right: Wrong answer guys! Dead
wrong!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Russ.
