Rick,
	Edit /etc/inittab, and comment out the line starting with x:5:repawn.
Then send init a SIGHUP.  (kill -SIGHUP 1 will probably do it.)
You can then exit from X - logout from the X secession, or
ctrl-alt-backspace...
