saving postscript file in latex

Hi,

How do you save a postscript file from the .dvi file in latex?  When I
do "dvips file.dvi", the postscript file automatically gets printed
out.  I would like to save the .ps file.  I've tried to redirect like
"dvips file.dvi > file.ps", but it still prints out the document,
creating a file.ps of 0 bytes.  Thanks,
