Forgot who posted nmap sP x.y.z.1-254 does list if so and so host is up.
Host (192.168.1.1) appears to be up
Host (192.168.1.3) appears to be up
Not sure if the person has a win network and wanted netbios scanning to map the
ip to the host name under linux...like Sniffer Pro does, etc.

IP address NetBIOS Name Server User MAC address
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
192.168.1.2 MYCOMPUTER JDOE 00-a0-c9-12-34-56
192.168.1.5 WIN98COMP <server> RROE 00-a0-c9-78-90-00
192.168.1.123 DPTSERVER <server> ADMINISTRATOR 08-00-09-12-34-56
just run it like so
/usr/local/bin/nbtscan 192.168.1.1-254
only thing I've noticed is it returns only 41 to 42 results...so I have to do
150-254 again. And no you don't have to be root to run it.
/usr/local/bin/nbtscan 192.168.100-150 >> scanresults
/usr/local/bin/nbtscan 192.168.151-254 >> scanresults
less scanresults
