After several failed attempts, I got Windows NT 4.0 and RedHat 6.1
installed on the same disk, using LILO to boot either. The procedure that
worked for me is as follows (former sticking points for me noted in all-caps):
(1) DELETE ALL PARTITIONS ON THE DISK,
(2) install NT, USING ITS INSTALL to create a primary partition,
(3) install Linux, creating all remaining partitions in the process,
(4) boot up a Linux boot floppy,
(5) run /sbin/lilo with no arguments.
In step (3), I selected writing the boot-loader to the MBR, since it
obviously knew about the installed NT system and was offering to supporting
booting it. I was therefore quite surprised to see NT's loader when I
rebooted. I don't know how step (5) was any different, but it worked. I
would be interested in hearing an explanation on this point.
I am next hoping to upgrade NT to W2K, possibly having to refresh lilo
again, as above.
