Just an idea: How about using procmail to generate either an
automatic reply or some kind of "delivery status file" (in case you
don't trust your beginners to check their mail for the automatic answer
for some reason) which is the world readable?

The first variant could be done with a receipe similar to a vacation
receipe. I have a working vacation receipe, so give me a shout if you're
interested.
