PPP not working

I am trying to run PPP dial-up access to the internet.   I am able to 
ping my ISP, but I am not able to use any other services.   I do not 
know what operating system they are using, but my first thought is 
that they must be using Windows NT (or '98).
If this is my problem, what should I do?   And if not, could there be 
something else I could try?
