nfs not showing up in 'ps'

in my redhat6.2 system nfs doesnt show up on 'ps ax' or 'pstree'

root corni /root]# pstree |grep nfs
[root corni /root]#
[root corni /root]# pstree |grep portmap
    |-portmap
[root corni /root]#
[root corni /root]# pstree |grep mountd
[root corni /root]#
only portmap shows up

but, nfs shows up in an 'S' link in rc5.d:
[jack corni rc5.d]$ ls *nfs*
S14nfslock S60nfs
[jack corni rc5.d]$

===== in contrast, on my other system with rhat 5.2 [byers byers d00rhmail]$ pstree |grep mountd |-rpc.mountd [byers byers d00rhmail]$ pstree |grep nfs |-rpc.nfsd $[byers byers d00rhmail]$ pstree |grep portmap |-portmap [byers byers d00rhmail]$ all 3, mountd, nfs, portmap, are there. ======

I have tried to manually start nfs via
[root corni init.d]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs start
just returns with no response
and nfs still doesnt show up in 'pstree' or 'ps ax'

I am just beginning to experiment with nfs.
any advice?
thanks
Jack
