External Projector under 5.2

Hi

I have a user who wants to use an external projector attached to the monitor
port on his laptop, however XFree86 appears to grab the video, it works in text
only mode but when you startx it fails.  Is there a config file we can change? 
I'd rather not hack with XF86Config.
