#Try The Gimp.
Add the applet Screen Shooter...tons of options or as Hal said the import.
--open a terminal and type 'import screenshot.jpg'
--use ALT-TAB to go to the screen you wish to capture
--type 'display screenshot.jpg'
--left click which will bring up ImageMagick's menu
--choose Transform / crop
--drag the mouse to make the area which you wish to crop
--File / Save
I find this quicker than opening the Gimp each time. If it has lots of text that
you wish to be legible try png rather than jpg.
