building rpms from source rpm's or tgz files

Any chance someone could point me in the right direction. every time i
have downloaded the source rpm and tried to create a rpm for my system i
have cd to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS and also tried /usr/src/redhat/SOURCE
and then tried to compile the rpm with the folowing command:

			rpm -ta name of file.tgz

			                    and also

			rpm -ba name of file.spec

			                 and the

			rpm --rebuild option

the only one to have worked so far is the nvidia
drivers src rpm, all the others give me errors
			regarding:

version field must be present in package: (main
			package)
			release field etc.etc
			and so on

checked the man page for rpm , still none the
			wiser

any chance someone could put in the wright
			direction please

p.s sorry about the spacing 'using evolution and
keeps defaulting to this section every time you
			press the tab'
