X shuts down unexpectedly

It has happened several times that while I am using X (KDE), the screen
suddenly goes blank and then the RedHat login screen comes up. I can log
back in and continue working, but I lose my session (ppp connection,
whatever is displayed on my terminals and web browser, etc.).
Consulting /var/log/messages I find that the following corresponding to X
bombing:
Sep 28 19:04:36 heidegger gdm[1363]: gdm_auth_user_remove: /home/ken is not owned by uid 0.
Sep 28 19:04:36 heidegger gdm[1363]:gdm_auth_user_remove: Ignoring suspiciously looking cookie file
/home/ken/.Xauthority
Anybody know what is going on here and/or how to fix it?
tia,
kf
