Openssl rpm install conflicts

I'm trying to install openssl-0.9.6-9.i386.rpm, on RH 7.0 and I'm getting a
dependency problem with libcrypto and libssl. It says it needs
libcrypto.so.0 and libssl.so.0.
I previously installed glibc-2.2-12, if I recall correctly, because my first
attempts to install openssl resulted in a requirement for libcrypto.so.1 and
libssl.so.1 (which are in glibc-2.2-12). In looking over the libraries
contained in openssl, however, it seems that libcrypto.so.0 and libssl.so.0
are in it. So why am I getting the dependency problem? I obviously don't
understand this, but the application installation documentation that I can
find is really sparse on dependent libraries and I'm struggling a bit.
Any suggestions welcome.
