Package management/upgrades?

Title: Package management/upgrades?

Hi All-

Returning RH user here (after many years). I've got some questions out of trying to install Wine but not to worry they're just generic package management questions and not Wine specific.

I downloaded the most recent Wine RPM from the primary wine website and tried to do a:

rpm -i wine<etc>.rpm

out of which I got the error that it was missing a couple of dependencies:
libXv.so.1 and libXxf86.so.1

This seemed kind of odd as I would imagine those libs would exist by the default installation.

So I checked with rpm -q -a and I do see 5-7 XFree86 packages including the libraries. I figured maybe I need the most recent Xfree so I downloaded them from rpmfind.com.

Trying to install the base package with:
rpm -F XFree86<etc>.rpm

but I get a number of failed dependencies.

So....bottom line....what's the shortest path to completely upgrading Xfree and hopefully having everything I need to be able to install Wine? How do you all handle general package management and upgrades?

Thanks for the help.
