David,

There seems to be great variability between (and even within) cable
providers but for me, using @home, the set-up has been identical to that
used to connect to any Ethernet network.  Is that what you did?  It sounds
like you did; in what way does "nothing work"?  What can you ping?  Did you
get a manual with the modem?  Does it seem to be working?

There are a lot of things that can go wrong but given this description it's
hard to say what to do.

You may find it easier to first try to connect using a Windows machine, if
you have one.
