OK, have you tried it with a desktop other than sawfish? Have you tried
dumping some of the gnome apps (I had some problems like this but, not
wuite the same with nautilus)?
Many gnome-related apps have done similar things to me, anything from
hard lockups to what seemed to be hard lockups but only lasted a few
minutes/hours. Not blaming gnome per se. It may actually be a combo of
some gnome apps and some libraries mixed on the system.
In other words. I don't have any brilliant insight. But I've had some
things happen somewhat like this and these are the things I traced it to
on MY boxen.
