re-install problem

I recently corrupted my boot partition and did a reinstall of seawolf.

Also did a full up2date.

Having backups of my configuration files I restored:

/etc/passwd
/etc/shadow
/etc/groups
/etc/samba/smb.conf
/etc/samba/smbusers

Now for the problem: windows boxes use samba to print on the linux printer -
no problem. Window's boxes can browse the samba shares - no problem,

BUT - if a windows box attempts to access a file on a samba share the Linux
machine totally freezes - keyboard and mouse lock, no telnet access into it,
no nothing (pretty serious to do this to linux). This state persists
indefinately - the only thing to do is pull the plug and hope the resulting
file corruptions are not too bad.

I tried a full samba reinstall. Tried wiping the smb.conf and starting again
- no luck. The smb.conf file is extremely simple - nothing special here -
does the same thing witht he default smb.conf file.

Any ideas on what is going on, diagnostic process, anything??
