Well I am not that scared. Now that I have your attention, please read.
I just finished upgrading two towers from 6.2 to 7.1 and I am thinking about
doing my IBM Thinkpad 600. The TP is also at 6.2. All three systems are dual
boot Linux / NT. Up until this upgrade I have always used the bootblocks
program to create bootblocks that will work under the NT loader. I have done
this since 4.1. The pain is that after the upgrade naturally the old bootblocks
file is for the older kernel and this does not work. LILO never installs
correctly because the root partition is either on the second SCSI disk or is
beyond the 4G barrier so I would have to boot single user, create the
bootblocks sector, move it to the NT partition via the shared FAT partition and
set up the new bootblocks under the NT OS loader. Not impossible but a pain.
NO MORE!!!
The root partition on one of the towers needed to be enlarged to accept the 7.2
root so I purchased Partition Magic. Best 60 bucks I have spent in a long
time. Not only did PM resize my partitions without me even reading the manual,
but I found this other program called Boot Magic. I installed Boot Magic on a
newly created 16 Meg FAT partition. It configured itself and found the Linux
boot partition automatically. Now when I reboot BM comes up and I can go to
either visual LILO or to the NT loader. I don't have to do the bootblocks
thing. I installed the BM then upgraded to 7.1 and it all just worked.
Ok ... now for the questions.
I am thinking of trying this same thing on my IBM Thinkpad 600. The HD in the
TP is 12 G with linux / on /dev/hda5 which is after all the NT/FAT partitions.
This might be a problem. /sbin/fdisk will not even read this drive. I have
not tried Partition Magic. Any comments here welcome.
Will Boot Magic work on the Thinkpad as well as the Towers. Again my plan is
to try to install BM and see if it boots 6.2 before upgrading to 7.1. Again
all comments welcome
The X-Window system for the Towers is Accelerated-X and I just reinstalled it
after I did the upgrade. That works fine. I do NOT own Acc-X for the Laptop.
Now 6.2 came configured on the Laptop so I have no clue as to how to configure
the base XFree86 on the laptop after the upgrade. All comments welcome.
Is there anything else that will cause problems with upgrading the Thinkpad???
All comments welcome, either to the list or return email
Thank you Linux Gurus
