Multiple instances of crond

When my RH 7.0 box boots, it starts running crond. I noticed that after a
couple of hours of running, another instance of crond appears. This wrecks
havoc with my cron scripts since each instance of cron then starts running
my scripts. I have not been able to see what/why the second instance of
cron is being launched. This started happening after I used up2date to
upgrade to the latest version of cron. Has anyone else seen this problem?
Thanks in advance for any help,
