can't open MODULES.DEP for writing.

hey gang,

I've got a strange problem.  I'm getting an error on boot that my system can't write to 
the modules.dep file.  well interestingly enough it isn't in the path that is being 
displayed in the error.  where do i change where the system looks for modules.dep?

and why might this have happened?
