What I meant is that all usernames are known to the system, but only the
user alec can login.

Perhaps I can explain what I'm trying to do a bit better. As I understand
Samba, it requires users be listed in its smbpasswd file, and also be
known to the system through /etc/passwd, NIS, etc.

I tried your suggestion in /etc/passwd and can still login as other
users... I know the trick you've posted works with Debian (which I've used
in the past).
