I had the same problem and no longer have it. I did one of the following
that fixed it, but I don't remember which:

1. Upgraded all of the eratta for RH 7.1
2. Upgraded KDE
3. Changed kernels
4. Stopped using KDE and started using icewm
5. Got more memory on the machine
6. Recompiled the srpm

I know it wasn't anything other than one of those, but I can't put my
finger on the actual fix because it happened late at night and I'd done
several things just prior to finding it working OK again. They are in no
particular order. For instance 1 and 6 are very likely the fix. But 4 and
5 are doubtful, 3 is a definite maybe and 2 is a possiblity but, not a
really strong one.
