Re: What Do These Terms Mean?

From: Bret Hughes <bhughes elevating com>

: a quick google search found that this is a pop mail client written by
Qualcomm
: Since you are using eudora as your mail client, and it is also written by
: Qualcomm I would guess that it is the pop client in eudora used to
retrieve mail.

I thought qpopper was the POP3 deamon? Anyway, Ben better places to get
help for this are:

1) the qpopper mail list (you can find information on the qualcomm site,
probably http://www.qualcomm.com)

2) Chuck Mead's mailhelp list (look at http://www.moongroup.com)

: > **What does it mean that sendmail is "Unable to get canonical name"?

:
: As mentioned in other posts this is a dns lookup issue. qpopper (not
sendmail)
: is trying to lookup the ipaddress of 209.20.225.224.
:
: On my system :
:
: $ nslookup 209.20.225.224
: Server: ns2.swbell.net
: Address: 151.164.1.7
:
: Name: sos-dialup224.nwlink.com
: Address: 209.20.225.224
:
: looks like a dial up connection.
:
: > **How do I do a reverse search to discover who owns a specific IP
address?

:
: nslookup will resolve an ip address to a hostname. For more information
you can
: use it or several other tools. I find it easiest to go to whois.arin.net
and use
: thier web based whois search.

So Ben, what appears to be happening is that there is a DNS problem.. for
example, maybe you've configured qpopper to only serve clients whose IP it
can lookup and it cannot. You probably need some help from some mail gurus.
If it is a DNS problem, no amount of fixing sendmail will help (although you
can probably ease whatever restriction is causig trouble.. if you want to).
In fact, this DNS problem could be a non-DNS problem... for example, maybe
someone tightened up a firewall between this email server and it's DNS or
something like that... Have fun.
