Have you taken a look at the .c file to see what it says? Some have some
lines at the end that tell what commands to use to compile the source
independently.
If you have a stock 2.4 kernel. USB is already available. I can't answer
for 2.2 kernels because I got USB at the same time I installed it. But, I
doubt that it has it builtin. The only option then would be to recompile.
