I guess if you have the CD on the same card as a hard-drive, then IDE writes
could pose a problem. If you can isolate the CD to it's own card, that
would be better.
But I *think* the advice you saw is because open programs can cause data
flow to the CR to slow which could ruin a CD. For example, it's not
uncommon for my Netscape to freak out and start using huge chunks of CPU and
MEM. So surfing the web on my Linux machine while I burn a CR could cause
the CR burn to fail.
