I remember reading that you could get away with creating a ~/.rpmrc file
(as root) and putting "Provides: foo" in it.
This will make rpm understand that package foo is installed.
I don't remember where I read this and I've only seen it once
so I'ld research further if I were you.
Try the "Maximum RPM" book.
