Hi folks, and thanks in advance,
I bought the subject NIC after reading in the HCL, for RHL6.2, which I
am running, that 3Com has built new drivers for that and related cards.
I interpreted that as meaning that the resident drivers in RHL6.2 do not
work or do not work fully. The file in /lib/modules that seems to apply
to this card is 3c90x.o There is no 3c905C.o.
On compiling the downloaded files identified by the HCL I find that my
6.2 system won't install it because the kernel ID is wrong. The kernel
that is used by the 6.2 that came with my RLH6.2 CD set is 2.2.14-5.0 It
seems strange that this inconsistency would occur. The compiled file,
3c90x.o, differs from /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.o/net/3c90x.o, so there
appears to be some reason to want to use the new driver. If so, I'm hung
up on the kernel ID problem. The kernel ID's addressed by the downloaded
files seem to be earlier than 2.2.14-5.0, of the 2.0.xxx sort, based on
looking at the 3c90x.h file.
I'm probably missing some stuff here, in looking for a way to resolve
the problem, like, *is there a problem*? Anyway, I think I need to ask:
* Is there a way to compile the downloaded driver for the 2.2.14-5.0
kernel, even though the 3c90x.h file seems to not address it?
* Would it be safe to just put the new 3c90x.o into /lib/modules, even
though the system seems to want to reject it?
* Is the loadable module already in /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/net already
ok for 10/100Base T use, which this NIC supports?
I'm a little out of my skill code here ....
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
bob jones (bobj eskimo com)
