XFree86 4.0.x and modelines

As the XFree86-4 config file doesn't contain modelines, is there a way to
add one?  I'd like to do 1280x960 instead of 1280x1024 but the only
1280x960 modes I can coax out of it are 60Hz (aieee!) and 85Hz.  85Hz is
within spec of my monitor, but I get really bad shaky video there.  By
ramping down the monitor specs in the config file, I can force the 60Hz
mode, but it's a tad to flickery.  I can get 1280x1024 very stable at
either 70 or 75Hz (don't recall which), so I'd assume that 1280x960 at a
similar refresh would be possible.
