On the machine where I want to install 7.1 this is my
                  Standard CMOS Setup
			(Award ...)

HARDDISKS TYPE SIZE CYLS HEAD PRECOMP LANDZ SECTOR MODE
Prim. Master : Auto 0 0 0 0 0 0 LBA
Prim. Slave : None 0 0 0 0 0 0 ---
Secnd. Master: None 0 0 0 0 0 0 ---
Secnd. Slave : None 0 0 0 0 0 0 ---

there's another screen in my BIOS, where the BIOS can detect
what's on the machine: obviously I have several options to
choose: 2 or 1 or 3. This screen for the Primary master, where
my Hard Drive is, looks like that:

		CMOS SETUP UTILITY
   Select Primary Master Option (N = Skip) : N

OPTION SIZE CYLS HEAD PRECOMP LANDZ SECTOR MODE
  2 (Y) 6399 778 255 0 13231 63 LBA
  1 6402 13232 15 65535 13231 63 Normal
  3 6402 827 240 65535 13231 63 Large

So as you can see from Standard CMOS Setup screen, at the
moment Prim. Master is set to 'Auto' and 'LBA', and what is
a bit confusing for me is the fact that although the LBA setting
at CMOS SETUP UTILITY is talking of a Size of 6399 (the disk has
6402 MB) for the LBA-setting, the correct size *and* LBA is
detected in the boot sequence of the machine (*without*
having chosen a CMOS SETUP UTILITY option), when it says:

[ ... ]

Pri. Master Disk : LBA, UDMA 2, 6402MB
Pri. Slave Disk : None
Sec. Master Disk : CDROM,UDMA 2
Sec. Slave Disk : None

[ ... ]

The manual for the Hard Drive says:

MODEL Cylinders Heads Sectors CAPACITY CAPACITY
                                            20 6
                                     (1MB =2 ) (1MB = 10 )
SV0644A 13232 15 63 6105MB 6402MB

So according to the Hard Drive Manual (if I understand it)
I can (should ?) set the CMOS SETUP UTILITY to these values:
OPTION SIZE CYLS HEAD PRECOMP LANDZ SECTOR MODE
 1 6402 13232 15 65535 13231 63 Normal

What would you do: let the BIOS Settings be what they are at the
moment (because the boot process obviously detects the drive) or
change them with the help of the CMOS SETUP UTILITY screen to

OPTION SIZE CYLS HEADS PRECOMP LANDZ SECTOR MODE
 1 6402 13232 15 65535 13231 63 Normal

(Danger ???)

Regards, and thanks for your help.

Trond, thanks for your advice: next time I have problems with 7.1 I'll
go to the seawolf-list: I simply didn't know or remember this list
is existing ... I hope you don't mind when I go on with the thread
as it's already started.

Thanks for your understanding ...

Regards.
