First of all, make sure that the cdrom drive/cable are not defective.
You can always
add the cdrom to /etc/fstab, if it does not show up there.

Subject: The case of the Vanishing CDROM drive
Looking for advice on how to replace the missing cdrom drive.
So, /mnt/cdrom won't mount anything.
The device itself was /dev/hdc, and dmesg shows that it's a recognized
cd drive.
However in /dev there is not a hdc.
I'm not sure how to create teh file for the device itself.
Any takers?
Thanks,
