I think you logged in as a normal user?
Try it as root.

This was at root. And to answer Mike Burger's point, yeah, the floppy was not write-protected.

If you want to create a bootdisk, try mkbootdisk.
Its shipped with 7.1 and allowes you to add kernel-parameters...

ran this: mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd1 2.4.2-2 spat out a bunch of numbers, then: floppy1: floppy timeout called end_request: I/O error, device 02:01 (floppy), sector 0 mkdosfs: unable to open /dev/fd1 Failed to format /dev/fd1

Which card do you use?

Is this answered by the printout below? If not, I'll need to open the box.

Whats the output from ifconfig -a ?

Link encap: Local Loopback ined addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric 1 RX packets:14 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:14 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

Thanks for your help;
