Chuck,


Not positive, but you may be seeing IRIX bug #815265.  If that's the case
(check out the information via SGI's SupportFolio at http://support.sgi.com),
you may want to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.13.  Mounting the filesystem using NFSv2
may also help, since I believe IRIX mounts using NFSv3 by default.
