Not sure here, but I used to have problems with various software that
caused similar things:
xscreensaver using some of the graphic-intensive modules
medusa and nautilus on gnome
some of the kde screensavers
star office
Once I changed video boards most of the problems stopped for me. But, I
still rpm -e medusa and nautilus if they accidentally get installed
because I don't trust them (i.e. they still caused problems last time I
tried them).
The xscreensaver modules were intermittent in the first place and it
took a long time to track down the ones causing problems. I also had
some (rare) problems with gnome in general causing lockups, but that
hasn't happened in awhile and disappeared even before I changed video
boards and after helix gnome was released. All of the others were still
happening on into 7.0 for me before they stopped.
