You may find some info in the message logs relating to the type of
network card installed. Something like:
Sep 16 16:48:41 roswell kernel: 00:05.0: 3Com PCI 3c905B Cyclone
100baseTx at 0x1000. Vers LK1.1.16

What does /etc/modules.conf look like?

Failing that, open the box and have a look.

The interface timed out and isn't running, this is just the loopback
device.

If you want to make life easier on yourself, set ONBOOT to no, until you
get the card working. It won't wait for a timeout during bootup that way.
The card is connected so that it can obtain it's configuration
information from a dhcp server? Silly question, just making sure.
