vi line number display

When using vi, my display allows for about 7 digits of line numbers. It
also displays leading underbars as shown below after "set nu" .
Is there a way/place to adjust this default behavior? It did not do it on
an older 5.something version of redhad but has ever since 6. I've looked at
":set all" but don't see anything there that appears to control this.
