terminal colours

Hello all,

This may sound like a trivial question but.....

How can i change the colour of the text in the
console?  I am not talking about changing it for a
terminal window inside Xwindows, i wish to know how i
can change it for the console itself.

I know my current distro (RH7.1) uses certain colours
to signify certain things, such as links and
executables, but very rarely use those.  I want to make
ALL my console text amber or green.

Sorry for the trivial question, but i miss the good old
monochrome days.
