Are you sill carrying 7.1 or earlier? If so, maybe drop something until the
problem can be fixed. Many other mirrors only carry the latest+updates. You
could do the same permanently or temporarily.

An alternative is to place one or more of the user directories in some other
place if space permits. I've linked things in /usr/local before. Also at the
top on / when needed and space permitted it. After some rearranging I don't
use it, but kcsmart used be symlinked from /usr/local/kcsmart  to
/home/kcsmart. /usr/<user> would work, /var/<user> could be made to work
(not too desireable, but an emergency is an emergency).

Just some ideas.

Elsewise, I'd go along with testing your plans on another machine if none of
the other ideas will do the trick.
