I agree, I've never seen them appear on top display (meaning they are below
a lot of other things).
But is this an accurate statement of the amount of work the machine is
doing? For example, is time spent swapping accounted for? I have never
seen the kernel on the list... And I've had a problem occur a few times
where my machine would start to idle at a load of 1.0 (and it was as
sluggish as you would expect) but top didn't show anything using CPU. (A
reboot fixed the problem for a while.)
